NOW ON NEWSSTANDS: Otaku USA, August 2023

By 3:00 AM

It's about that time—there's a new Otaku USA on newsstands for the summer, and I was busy this go 'round! Fortunately, that meant lots of opportunities to tell people about some of my favorite winter anime series.

The latest issue, featuring Call of the Night on the cover, has two features and two reviews by yours truly, along with tons of material on anime, manga, games, cosplay, and more from the regular team. I love getting these in the mail and seeing how absolutely packed with articles these bad boys are.

In the review section, I kick off with an early look at Soaring Sky! Precure. I found out on Twitter that there's a loyal Precure contingent reading the mag, thanks to my Delicious Party feature a while back. Rest assured, I'm not even close to the only fan of the series on staff. So there will always be plenty of Cure coverage to go around, be it by me or one of the other talents writers on the team.

I also got to gush about The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague, one of my favorite slow-burn romance anime in ages. This is a sweet little series that everyone should give  ago. If you're wondering why, check out my review—I have a lot to say about this show.

Over in feature-land, I'm talking about Gen Urobuchi's new series Revenger—its classic action vibes, cool aesthetic, and where exactly it falls in Japan's history. (A fun aside: I was writing this one down to the wire, as new episodes regularly introduced more bits of into that placed it more firmly to certain years.) It was an interesting opportunity to do a bit of research on the religious landscape of this era, and how that intersected with... certain other things going on at the time.

And I wrap things up with a look at Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, possibly my top anime of this year's winter season. I'll put it this way: I've started picking up the light novels because I cannot bear to wait for season 2. This is a gorgeous series, not just for the fae romance and worldbuilding, but especially for the commentary on maintaining integrity in a creative career. And yeah, my feature may lean into that aspect of the show more than any other.

... okay, that's technically not everything. Once in a while, one of my articles from the site makes it to the final page of the mag. In this issue, I give a quite rundown of must-see Leiji Matsumoto anime in honor of the late great creator.

Keep an eye out for this issue on newsstands (or in your mailbox if you're a subscriber) soon! And if you want to read more, check out the Otaku USA website, where you'll find anime news and features every day (including some more by me!).
