Shadow of the Gallifreyan

I've got a new book out... yep, it's been a minute.

Shadow of the Gallifreyan is another charity anthology (and we know I love doing those) from Altrix Books, which I co-run with Paul Driscoll. It's been slightly dormant lately as, to put it lightly, we've both been Going Through It.

While my name is on the cover as a co-editor, Shadow is Paul's brainchild. Inspired in both name and concept by Gerd Theissen's Shadow of the Galilean, this is a massive collection of flash fiction from the points of view of minor characters in the Doctor Who universe. No Doctor, no companions, no major baddies. These are all snapshots of how the world was after the Doctor left, from the perspectives of people left behind.

In addition to writing the framing material, Paul contributed a few pieces to this. In addition to doing some of the editing, I contributed... one. I'm hoping for Book Two to contribute more. But, as I said, I've been going through it. Writing has been hard lately. But that's a topic for another time.

My story is the very last in the book, covering the aftermath of "Heaven Sent." Yes, there is a way to do that. I will admit to leaning a bit on "Hell Bent." But I wrote it in an evening, after a long dry spell, and I'm pretty happy with it.

"Heaven Sent" is my favorite Doctor Who episode of all time, so much so that I've literally written a book about it. I love how it delves into the Doctor's fears, flaws, and motivations, and how they all work with and against each other to manifest our favorite turbulent alien hero. This was a great opportunity to examine that turbulence, and what fuels it, through someone else's eyes.

All that said, the book is raising money for Shelter, a UK charity raising funds to combat homelessness. This volume will only be available for a limited time, and every penny raised will go toward this cause. If you'd like a really stellar, really weighty collection of more than 100 Doctor Who stories by 65 authors—and who wouldn't—grab a copy while you can!

And if you'd like to contribute to Book Two, keep your eyes on the Altrix website, where we'll post open calls when the time comes.
