THE SECRET OF THE SAPPHIRE SENTINEL

by J. Dianne Dotson
Available October 21

After the events of The Inn at the Amethyst Lantern, Gen Lightworth has a lot to contend with. People from the past, before the atmosphere stopped blocking the sun and Night Living became the way forward, walk among her friends and family. One of those people of the past, Styx, wants to be friends — and no one else seems to see a problem with it. And as the new school year begins, it seems there may be a "fox in the henhouse": someone (or someones) untrustworthy, looking to bring down the bit of happiness humanity has made for itself 500 years in the future.

As the leader of the Fireflies, a group of teens equipped with knowledge and abilities to protect their world, Gen feels both obligated and overwhelmed. Her feelings for Styx fluctuate between distrust and fascination. New faculty at her school are cracking down, trying to turn their parents against them. And the barrier that protects them is weakening the whole time. One small clue in the Inn, potentially leading to another Source, could fix everything. And it also might explain why their household robots are acting up lately.

Much like its predecessor, The Secret of the Sapphire Sentinel is the kind of post-apocalyptic story we need in this day and age: one full of hope for the future. The ongoing story of Glimmerbright presents a future world that isn't just survivable; it's colorful, exciting, and brimming with life. Nor does this book ever talk down to its younger readers, tackling the difficult in-between teenage years when we aren't sure whether it's us changing dramatically or everyone else. Equal parts futuristic sci-fi, whimsical fantasy, and teen romance, this is a worthy successor to The Inn at the Amethyst Lantern.
